Railway Herald
The Dartmoor Railway's western extremity is seen in this image at Meldon Quarry taken on 14th July 2012, featuring 'Thumper' No. 1132 about to return to Okehampton with the 16:30 departure. Beyond the station is a footpath leading to Meldon Viaduct that formerly carried railway services to and from Plymouth and north Cornwall. The service provided by this railway would appear to be aimed primarily at railway enthusiasts and walkers, though it does have ambition to link in with First Great Western at Crediton to provide a regular service from Exeter. The quarry is well known for supplying many thousands of tons of ballast for railway use over the years, but the rusting tracks would suggest that there is no contract in force currently.
