Next to the Kennet and Avon canal is the preserved Crofton Beam Engine, which used to pump water from a reservoir into the canal to maintain the required depth. This excellent piece of industrial archeology is occasionally steamed, but not on the day of the visit of the photographer, but it may be glimpsed behind First Great Western HST power car numbered No. 43030 working at the rear of the 12.18 London Paddington to Taunton on 27th July 2011.
