A water crane at Carlisle was still in situ on 30th December 1970 as class 50's nos. No. D408 & D423 wait to depart with the 12.05 Euston to Glasgow service. 'Hoovers' were common power at this time, this pair having replaced electric traction at Crewe. They had just run the 90 miles from Preston in 73 minutes.
