A little photographed piece of railway was the former Great Central line which diverged from the Sheffield Victoria to Rotherham Central line at Tinsley Station Jnct. The line went through to join the Doncaster to Barnsley line near Wombwell, although latterly served only as far as the Smithywood coking plant which closed in 1986. A fairly new English Electric Type 3 no. D6960 (37260) descends the steep gradient from Ecclesfield East with a loaded coke train in October 1965.
