Commissioning of the new North Chord at Doncaster has now been completed.

GBRf Class 66/7 No. 66751 was the first locomotive over the new chord when it undertook ‘light engine’ moves to test the signalling system on 1st June, the chord opening to revenue-earning traffic the following day.

The new 3.2km chord over the ECML at Joan Croft, improves the speed of freight travelling between the Humber ports and Aire Valley power stations, it reduces conflicting moves on the ECML and also minimises the distance travelled. The new trackwork should provide better pathing for freight traffic.

The first revenue-earning freight to use the route was Freightliner Heavy Haul's 11:45 Immingham Docks to Ferrybridge C Power Station loaded coal working on 1st June, hauled by Powerhaul-liveried Class 66/5 No. 66504.
