Alstom has completed work at Longsight to overhaul Northern Rail’s 17-strong Class 323 EMU fleet to help upgrade the trains for passengers.

The project was undertaken with two overhauls being undertaken simultaneously; the work on one project included bogies being exchanged, inter-vehicle couplers being overhauled, new gangways fitted and brake equipment exchanged, the rest of the work involving floorboards and flooring replaced, seat shells refurbished and recovered, and car heaters and train doors overhauled. More than 2,000 components were exchanged on each three-car unit, with the work being undertaken by a dedicated team over a five-week period.

Northern Rail’s No. 323234 was the first of the Class to be overhauled, and No. 323231 was the last to go through the process.
