Formerly complemented by wooden sleepers, the down mainline (second track to left) and down passing loop (furthest left track) at Carstairs have been fitted with brand new concrete sleepers as a part of the Carstairs modernisation project. The introduction of concrete sleepers to the passing loop means that after a long time, the imposed 50mph 'temporary' speed restriction has now been lifted.
