Taken from a balcony on the 17:07 Brocken Summit to Wernigerode service on 30th June 2014 which is being held in the refuge siding, Class 99 No. 99 7240-7 storms past working the 16:47 Drei Annen Hohne to Brocken Summit formed obogie carriages. Its just under 12 miles from Drei Annen Hohne to the Summit during which time trains climb which makes the average gradient over the whole journey 1 in 32.6. Needless to say trains are heard long before they are seen.
