40 years ago on 10th May 1980, the Duchess made her first mainline appearance after a long restoration. Princess Coronation Class No. 46229 Duchess of Hamilton ran two specials round the York Circle (York, Leeds, Harrogate, York) named The Limited Edition after the limited edition print painted by Terence Cuneo with the proceeds going to the restoration. This was the fist train departs from York at 11.30 seen passing under Holgate Road bridge. This being her first run on BR metals since withdrawal in February1964. I had purchased a print that also entitled me to a free ticket on the afternoon train. A very memorable experience.
