By mid-1998 few of the remaining Class 31 locomotives were still in BR blue livery, so the sight of two together was unexpected. Class 31s No. 31450 and No. 31434 pass Hatton Mill on 13th July 1998 on a short engineering working from Crewe to Bescot. Both these locomotives have been scrapped No. 31450 in April 1999 and No. 31434 in April 2003.
