In their wisdom BR converted the Up Line of the NER/Midland Line immediately south of Carlisle Station into a long siding and thus created a bottleneck on this approach to the station which persists to this day. Class 47 No. 47595 occupies the siding with 16:15 Carlisle-Leeds stock before propelling back into the station on 25th June 1988.
