Plaque on Platform 1 at Liverpool Lime St commemorating two members of staff who died back in 1937. For many years, this marble plaque was displayed at Edge Hill Depot honouring Driver Ball and Fireman Higgins who were in charge of the 1.15pm Liverpool to Euston Express on 20th May 1937 when the a smokebox deflector plate collapsed in Primrose Hill Tunnel, near Euston, causing a blowback. Both man stayed in the cab, which had become engulfed in flames, and brought the train safely to a stand, suffering extensive burns, from which they both subsequently died in hospital. It was originally unveiled at the shed by Eric Treacy, then Vicar of St. Mary's Church, Edge Hill.
