Seen through the smoke and steam at Waterside Exchange Sidings near Dalmellington, Ayrshire on 24th February 1977 are 2 Andrew Barclay tank engines. The crews have stoked up their fires and retired to the nearby bothy for a brew before returning to Pennyvenie Colliery with another load of empties. In the foreground is NCB Ayrshire Area No. 1, an 0-4-0ST dating from 1955 while behind is NCB West Ayr Area No. 17, an 0-6-0T built in 1913. Both survived the closure of the Waterside System the following year, with No. 1 still residing at Waterside in the care of the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Society while No. 17 is currently undergoing a rebuild at the Llangollen Railway.
