To prevent build up of mineral deposits in the boiler many of the modern SAR locos were fitted with manual blowdown facilities. To prevent the high pressure steam causing mayhem the larger loco sheds had blowdown tunnels, and at De Aar Shed on 2nd June 1985 SAR Class 25NC 4-8-4 No. 3463 Tania is using the facility
