A Blue Plaque can be seen on the Chapel-en-le-Frith station building in memory of John Axon and John Creamer, the former was posthumously awarded the George Cross for fighting to control his runaway locomotive to the end, a Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48188 and thirtyfour wagons, after its brake pipe burst on a 1 in 58 gradient prior to it hitting the back of slow moving freight train in which the guard also lost his life in the accident which happened on 9th February 1957.
