Ex-Essex Express Class 309 No. 309616 enters Manchester Piccadilly on 6th April 1995 with a local service. After being displaced from Liverpool St-Clacton & Walton services in the mid-1990s, a handful of serviceable class 309s entered service in and around the Manchester area. They were repainted in a varient of NSE livery by replacing the red stripe with light blue. This unit was later converted to departmental use and renumbered 960101. It is now being preserved along with 309624 (960102).
