WINNERS OF NEW STATION FUNDING ANNOUNCED

The Department for Transport has announced the winning bid for the next round of new station funding in England and Wales.


The green light has been given for stations that will provide long term benefits to passengers and the wider economy, with the result that over £16 million will be invested in the projects, all of which will be accessible, with step-free access throughout.

The winning bids are Horden Peterlee, in County Durham, Warrington West in Cheshire, Reading Green Park, Bow Street in Ceredigion, and Portway Parkway in Bristol. All of the stations will be completed by March 2020. The announcement is the second round of funding with Newcourt (Exeter), Lea Bridge (London), Pye Corner (Newport) and Ilkeston having already been funded and opened, while Kenilworth, near Coventry, is to be open later this year.

The new Horden Peterlee two platform station, will receive £4.4 million of DfT funding, against a total cost of £17.2 million. Warrington West, has the highest total cost of the five, at £17.2 million, for which the DfT will fund £4.23 million of the project. Again a twin platform station, it is hoped that the station will help to reduce congestion on the M62 and will be provided with a 268-space car park.

Another twin platform station will be built at Reading Green Park, which will receive £2.3 million of the £16.5 million cost. Bow Street in Ceredigion, Wales received £3.945 million towards a total project cost of £6.76 million, it will act as a park and ride site for Aberystwyth and Borth stations, while Portway Parkway, Bristol which will receive £1.67 million towards a total project cost of £2.23 million, and serve an existing park and ride site.
