The new passenger carrying trains for Mail Rail, which is being opened by The Postal Museum as a tourist attraction, have arrived from their manufacturers Severn Lamb.

The trains are being delivered to Mount Pleasant and craned in parts, through the original 100-year-old Mail Rail shaft.

The design of the vehicles follows that of the original Mail Rail trains, but features certain tweaks, such as a lowered floor to allow passengers to ride comfortably through the seven foot tunnels. They will be fully assembled in-situ, in the original engineering depot for the network at Mount Pleasant, although one of the trains will be completed at the Depot itself to avoid delays to the project.

The depot, which originally helped keep Mail Rail running for 24 hours a day, will form the start point of the ride, as well as an exhibition and versatile hire space when Mail Rail is open next spring.
