For a period during 1999 unit shortages in the Midlands resulted in the Bedford - Bletchley service being operated in top and tail formation with Fragonset Class 31s and rolling stock. On 26th August 1999, Class 31 No. 31468 Hydra stands at Bletchley, having arrived from Bedford. Classmate No. 31601 Bletchley Park station 'X' is on the rear. Both locomotives survive in preservation.
