Control of the Brenner Pass was ceded to Italy after the end of the First World War. FS needed freight locomotives capable of hauling heavy trains over gradients of up to 2.2%. The class 480 locomotive was designed for this work and No. 017 was one of 18 locomotives built, all of which entered servive in 1923. FS 480-017 is shown at the Pietrarsa museum on 6th May 2010.
