The Berks & Hants line was originally a branch following the Kennet Valley from Reading and terminating at Hungerford. In order to build the Extension westwards to Devizes the route had to turn sharply to the southwest along a side valley, and a number of properties in the High St had to be demolished to make way for the new formation, both of which consequences are on view as the midday Whatley Quarry to Churchyard Sidings stone train runs smoothly round the 75mph curve in the charge of Class 66/0 No. 66012 on 11th November 2016.
