A Paddington - Bedwyn local service worked by GWR Class 166 No. 166204 crosses the recently repainted rivetted plate girder bridge over the Kennet & Avon canal just to the west of Hungerford on 11th March 2016. The Berks & Hants Extension Railway here was originally built as a single track line to Devizes, only doubled when the GWR built the direct line to the West Country. The newer span on the up line has substantial steel girders suitable for the heavy stone trains with their 25 tonne axle loading which cross many times each weekday.
