The pioneer Class 87 locomotive is now preserved as part of the National Collection at York after over 30 years continous service on the WCML. The 'Electric Scots' were introduced from 1973 as the WCML became electrified along the whole route and the 36 '87's worked this route until their replacement by the Virgin Pendolinos. 87001 carried the name 'Royal Scot' for most of its working life from 1977, it was however originally named 'Stephenson' and after the re-naming to 'Royal Scot' the Stephenson plates were transferred to 87101 which carried the name until it was withdrawn. 87001 has now been re-fitted with the original nameplates and re-painted in original BR Blue.
